Child labour refers to the use of children as a source of labour while depriving them of their fundamental rights in the process. Such rights include the opportunity to enjoy their childhood, attend school regularly, have peace of mind, and live a dignified life. It`s like exploiting children for financial gain. Some industries employ children in order to cut down on labour costs since their wage demand is low.

Causes

  •  Illiteracy:A society with many educated people understands the importance of going to school and pursuing dreams.Illiterate people view education something meant for the privileged in the society. They will therefore not provide support to children so that they can go to school and build solid foundations for future success.

  • Early Marriages:  Marrying at an early age is a major contributing factor to overpopulation. Young parents are able to procreate lot of children because they remain fertile for a long time. Having many children with little or no resources to support them leads to child labour.

  •  Low Aspiration:It is important for parents and children to understand that they can work hard and make something great of themselves. Low aspirations by parents and children is a major cause of child labour because in such a situation, being employed in a local factory, or selling grocery in the streets is the normal way of life. They do not aspire to become professionals in the society or great entrepreneurs.

Poverty & High cost of education: Quality education is expensive. To many parents who live in elevated poverty, priority is given to providing food for the family because education is too expensive to afford especially when there are many children to pay school fees for. Instead of letting children stay at home, parents opt to have them working as unskilled labourers to help support the family. It is a huge problem especially in developing countries where parents are unable to generate income due to the lack of employment opportunities or education.
It is not a pleasant experience to be kept working as a child while your age-mates are out playing and going to school.Child labour may also result in the lack of emotional growth and thus insensitivity.
It`s consequences can be easily understood by the following diagram-(source unicef.org )Image result for effects of child labour
Some of the ways I think the problem of child labour can be resolved:

Abstain from employing a child as domestic help-In India people tend to employ children as domestic help or for petty works in shops and garages e.g. helper, cleaner etc

Report to Police when you see child labour-In addition to it you can also report to media and various NGOs like Bachpan Bachao  AndolanCry Save the Children which are working for child rights. This will ensure the child being exploited get’s timely help and is rescued.

Counsel the poor to send their children to school -In our  locality we come across poor people like our maid, milkman, newspaper vendor, plumber, etc who have got their children working instead of being in school. Try to convince them that their vicious cycle of poverty will be broken only when their children are educated and get a meaningful employment after growing up.

Donate to organisations fighting against child labour-donate to prominent  and credible NGOs like CRY World Vision Save the Children , Bachpan Bachao Andolan and many others to ensure that every single child gets timely help These organisations also ensure these children take up education instead of work. Additionally, you can also donate and sponsor a child’s education.

We cannot sacrifice the entire generation of children to poverty while we wait for it to end. It’s time we take oath and devote some time towards such social issues.
