Rating: **** 1/2
Director: Michael Showalter
Starring: Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano
Verdict: Hilarious and heartfelt — a superb romantic comedy.
It stars Kumail Nanjianias a stand-up comedian living in chicago trying to make it in the world of comedy all while the same time driving Uber to pay for bills and expenses. One night he meets Emily(played by Zoe Kazman) at comedy club and falls in love with her. This relationship between them (though its a comedy drama) is one of the most real ,authentic and natural pieces of on-screen chemistry I`ve seen in a movie in a long time.It felt as if I`m watching my closest friends meet & starting to fall for each other.
Kumail lives in the same city as his family,a very traditional Pakistani family who want nothing more for him not just one-that he marries a Pakistani girl & somebody they pick out for .So, Kumail has to constantly hide from his family that he is dating a white girl.Their relationship gets abrupltly over when she realises Kumail has no intention of telling his parents about his white, non-Muslim girlfriend and that he plans to abide by his mother’s repetitive ritual of introducing him to eligible Pakistani women who just happen to “drop by” during family dinners ☺.
Suddenly, as the name suggests ,Emily contracts a mysterious illness which brings him to her bedside and forced to face her fiesty parents , who are perplexed and annoyed by the presence of their daughter’s ex while she is lying in a medically induced coma.
The best part about this movie is how for Indian audiences it doesn’t feel as if this is a Pakistani man’s story – because the traits Kumail shares with his family are most probably the way an Indian man would have with his parents.
This movie brings such a light touch to the storytelling that we don’t realise how dark the material is actually becoming. One of the glories of the film is its ability to find comic details in the most bleak and oppressive situations.
